After the French pharmacist and chemist Antoine Baumé (Senlis 1728 – Paris 1804).
Baumé was a professor of chemistry at the Ecole de Pharmacie. In addition to the bowl named after him, he also developed new methods of dyeing fabrics, gilding watches, extinguishing fires and preserving grain.
