bavelian

artfully carved wooden or ivory group

After the Dutch artist Cornelis Bavelaar (Leiden 1775-1831), his father and his son.

The Bavelaars cut small dioramas with figures and objects placed in perspective on a ground plan behind glass. Bavelaar himself carved in miniature all the gates and other important buildings of Leiden in wood, bone or ivory.

His followers also worked with painted paper and cardboard. The Netherlands Open Air Museum in Arnhem and the Stedelijk Museum de Lakenhal in Leiden have a collection of 'Bavelelaartjes'.
