soft cloth
After the weaver Baptiste, according to some Baptiste Chambray, who worked in Cambray in the thirteenth century. The English word
cambric for batiste refers to the same city.
The fabric was originally made from the softest and longest flax fibres, later also from wool or cotton. Today it is the general name for a fine type of cotton for blouses, dresses and lingerie.
