bandoneon

small accordion

After the German dealer in musical instruments Heinrich Band (Krefeld 1821 – 1860).

According to most sources, the first bandoneon was built in 1835 by Carl Friedrich Uhlig from Chemnitz. Band marketed the instrument as a music dealer. There is no evidence that he claimed the invention for himself.

Nevertheless, in Krefeld the instrument was soon called 'bandoneon', perhaps by analogy with accordion.

It remains a mystery how the bandoneon came to be in Argentina and why the technically difficult instrument overtook the established accordion and in tango music even the guitar, the violin and the keyboard.
