arianism

doctrine that denies the divinity of Christ

After the Alexandrian priest Arius (c. 250-336). Arius taught that the Word of God (the Logos) which comes to us in Jesus Christ was God's first and highest creature, but that Christ Himself could only be called God by way of an honorary title.

The Church felt that the biblical mystery was insufficiently respected. The teachings of Arius, condemned as heresy at the Council of Constantinople in 381, were occasionally very successful and led to fierce religious disputes.

Later he would lead a powerful existence among the newly Christianized Germanic peoples. The conversion of the Franks in 496 marked the final end of Arianism.
