After Atalanta, a runner known in Greek mythology.
According to one version, she was an Arcadian princess who was abandoned by her father, suckled by a she-bear and raised among hunters. She became a courageous huntress.

According to another story, she was a Beotian princess who promised that she would only marry the man who defeated her in a race. Death would await the loser. Ultimately, she was defeated by a man who threw three golden apples at her feet during the match.
