After the American inventor Isaac Babbitt (Taunton, Mass. 1799 – Somerville, Mass. 1862).
Babbitt studied to be a goldsmith. In 1839 he developed the special alloy of 80% tin, 10% antimony and 10% copper for the South Boston Iron Company. The American Congress gave him a bounty of $20,000 for this.
