systematic system for performing calculations

After the Arab mathematician Abu Ja'far Mohammed ibn Musa, nicknamed al-Khwarizmi, the man from Khwarizmi (ca. 780-850), now Chiva in Uzbekistan.

Via al-Khwarizmi, Europe became familiar with the current, originally Indian numerals, which we have come to call 'Arabic' numerals through al-Khwarizmi. His name has been corrupted into 'algorismi' in titles of Latin books from the Middle Ages.

The word "algebra" is derived from al-jabr, from the title of his book Hisab-al-jabr wa'l muqabala, "The Regrouping and the Contradiction."
