After the German chemist Kurt Alder (1902-1958). Alder was a student and later assistant to Otto Diels (dieldrin). Together they worked at the Christian-Albrecht University of Kiel. In 1950 they were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
The agent was widely used in fruit cultivation, but has since been banned because it can accumulate in the fatty tissue of living organisms and affect nerve tissue.
