afzelia

tree species from West Africa

After the Swedish botanist Adam Afzelius (Larf 1750 – Uppsala 1837).

Afzelius was a student of the Swedish botanist Carl von Linné. From 1794 to 1796 he explored the west coast of Africa. He spent many years in London, where he was secretary of the Swedish embassy.

The hard wood of the afzelia is widely used in Western Europe for windows and doors.
